I've become a huge fan of The Big Picture, part of Boston.com (which is the website for the The Boston Globe??), but anyhow it is a regular collection of some of the most amazing photos on a given theme or event. A big 'ole hat tip to Jen for leading me to the site right after the election with this most amazing collection of photos from the Obama campaign!
I love it so much that I have started adding links to these photo sets on my "Express Lane" in the sidebar (which ultimately land in my blog as compilations/summaries every couple of weeks)... so keep an eye out for them at either place!
Anyhow, not that I think it will ever happen, but if I ever get cocky and think I am a good photographer, I only have to look at these photo sets to feel anything but! However, I still like to think great occasions make for great photographs and it is my hope that I would be able to approximate something at least halfway as special if I happened to be at these same places at the same times (well, as long as they were safe... many of these photos are often not from desirable locations and/or situations).
Anyhow, yesterday there was a feature on the Chinese New Year, celebrating the Year of the Ox. While these pictures were from all around the world, I particularly enjoyed those from China, and more specifically, Beijing. Since our trip, I have really become obsessed with China, so it was really interesting to see these pictures.
I was particularly thrilled to see one of the pictures in the set that was nearly identical to one of mine... again getting back to that thought/hope that I am pretty good and could capture something approximately the greatness of these.... anyhow here is Picture #21 from this week's set of The Big Picture:

And below, is my very own picture sans all those folks dressed up in Qing Dynasty costumes!
Pretty nifty, huh?! Actually I think my picture even looks a little better (ha!) thanks to some post-processing HDR work on it. It was very gray, overcast, muggy, hazy while we were there... so "cooling" down the image gave it a nice blue tint.

I have basically decided that The Big Picture could decide to cover *anything* and it would be amazing. Next up ... the Big Picture covers ... DIRT! :)
And ya, I noticed the similarity yesterday to your shot. While theirs captures a cool moment, I do like yours better.
