Just got in from another attempt at taking pix of the front yard holiday lightdisplay.
Thanks to Scott for leading me to this article... Strobist: How to Photograph Christmas Lights... it definitely helped (I hope you agree... you can compare the pix below to the one "good" pic I managed to get a week or so ago).

The key seemed to be setting your camera's white balance to "tungsten" (get out that manual!)... taking pix at twilight (not when it is entirely dark)... and, if you don't have a steady hand (I sure don't!), using a tripod. Keep shooting away... my first and last 10 or so pix were so-so... as the post says, there's a magical 10 minute window where the amount of light is just right.

Wow! Those pictures turned out really nice. I'll have to actually read that article I sent you.
