For me there wasn't too much to get terribly excited about during last night's Emmys... regular readers know that I watch a fair amount of television... but apparently I do not watch Emmy Award winning television.
Out of the winners for ten major categories (comedy & drama and the four acting categories in each), we watch 2 of them... yes, 2! So hurray for Lost taking home best drama and Felicity Huffman for Best Actress in a comedy for Desperate Housewives. While I was rooting for Marcia Cross, I have absolutely no problems with Felicity since I think she is probably the most under-rated lady in the bunch (and I loved her in Sports Night as well)... in fact, I would dare to say (although I do love her) that Teri Hatcher (the prohibitive favorite to win the award last night) is a tad over-rated... Susan just not seem terribly different from any "real life" Teri Hatcher interview that I have seen...
But otherwise in the comedy categories, it was no surprise that Raymond took home the top prize and Brad Garrett and Doris Roberts added another trophy to their shelf... on the bright side, with them out of contention next year hopefully there will be more room (and wins!) for the casts of Scrubs and Arrested Development (if both of them are able to survive this year!) and that there is no "nostalgia voting" next year for the cast of Will & Grace... most folks are befuddled on how the show racked up so many noms this year... so I imagine it will be more of the same in their suspected final year.
In the drama categories, the acting categories were a complete shut-out. Don't watch Boston Legal... and admittedly was still surprised it was on (didn't it get bumped by Grey's Anatomy?).... so, as I probably said around this time last year, can't say much about the Spader and Shatner repeat wins (and while you're at it, put on the list that just doesn't get the Shatner love). Also, a bit confounded by the Patricia Arquette win for Medium... again, I don't watch the show... but as a "real" person she just seems to have zero charisma... I wonder whether the real life pyshic that Arquette plays was able to tell her that she was going to win the Emmy?!
Some other random thoughts:
As Ellen suggested, I think we saw the first and last of "Emmy Idol"... it seemed like an awful idea even on paper, so no shock that it was one of the biggest thuds of the night... granted the Trump/Karen Walker "Green Acres" was amusing... but the rest were awful... one of the "Fame" dancers just about dropped the poor girl, Macy Gray seemed drunk (but probably for good reason, she was a performer on Emmy Idol!), and Shatner again... and a performance that probably sent people to cancel their opera tickets for next season.
Speaking of music... did the Black Eyed Peas really need to do the opening gig? Ok, Earth, Wind & Fire I can kind of understand... but I think the Peas just lost a few cool/hip points in my boo.
Does Hugh Jackman have a boyfriend... from his shake his hips Peter Allen performance to the "five alarm gaydar" of John sitting with his wife... I am having my doubts... or fantasies. Also, I think they should no longer give out awards to a person who hosts another award show...
So Naveen Andrews (Sayid on Lost) is dating Barbara Hershey in real-life! Saw them on the red carpet on thought it was an odd combo... but alas it is true... she is 57 he is 36... Go Barbara!
Hurray... Amazing Race picks up its 3rd consecutive Emmy and remains the only show that has won in the category of Best Reality-Competition program.

Definitely the best moment in a very boring evening was Felicity Huffman winning. You are right about her being underrated. I love love love her and agree with you about Sportsnight.

okay so my friend calls me the day after the emmy award show and asks if i saw it ... i say: "no, i was on the train coming back from broadway-on-broadway" ... he says: "who was the cute guy sitting next to hugh jackman's "wife"?" ... "not sure", i say ... "i'll do some research" ... thus i came to your website ... all i know is that there is a fabulous gay aussie mag called DNA ... it rated our hugh-boy one of the ten sexiest men ... is he of isn't he?
