Bought a new computer yesterday, well technically our company bought a new computer for me. It was the first time that I felt I didn't need a new computer -- usually they tend to get bogged down over the years and you find yourself screaming for a new one, but not this time around. But my business partner reminded me it was time to go shopping -- and since the corporate bank account was looking good - now would be a good time.
We get new computers every 3 years for ourselves -- that seems to be a pretty good cycle. In that period of time, the technology has pretty much advanced enough that you can get a significantly faster computer for about the same amount of money you paid last time around. $1500 seems to be that figure for a much better (but not necessarily top of the line) model.
I probably won't get around to setting it up until later in the week or over the weekend. Since my computer is "home-base" for our wireless network what happens here tends to have a rolling effect throughout our household (Todd's computer as well as our networked TiVos). I also have to load up all the software and transfer all my workfiles and other stuff to the new computer - so I don't want to chance doing that during a "work" day. As I mentioned last week during our broadband router crisis, it is no fun troubleshooting while under time and/or work pressures.
So here is my new computer - a Sony VAIO RB30. My current computer is a Sony and since I have had no problems with it, I decided to remain loyal to the brand. Hopefully, I have not just jinxed myself. So I am improving from a 1.6 GHz processor to 3.0 GHz ... a 75 gig hard drive to 200 gig (like I'll need all of that)... and a DVD-RW drive (again not something I have a use for at the moment). Also, I have my first flat-panel LCD monitor -- now this is something I am excited about... regular monitors are so clunky, that it is nice to have a one that is more streamlined... and for the first time I was able to fit all these computer boxes comfortably in my car!
My shopping experience was pretty good... of course, they didn't have the first computer I wanted in stock, but the I was fortunate enough that they had 1 RB30 in stock. It took awhile to get some assistance. At Best Buy it seems they are on you like vultures the minute you walk down an aisle or else you are whistling Dixie waiting for someone to notice that your "I'm ready to buy something NOW" face on. I eventually tracked down a young kid who looked like he just came back from his smoking pot break - but this was good news, like I said, since he put up little resistance... taking "no" the first time around when offering up the bundle deal or the extended warranty plan.
